ITV's 60 Minute Makeover - Canterbury, Kent

This 60 Minute makeover episode from ITV, is in Canterbury, Kent. It is for Justin, the local vicar, and his four children who all live in the church Rectory in Canterbury. As a church house Justin and his family have put up with thread-bare carpets and hand-me down, pick and mix furniture all their lives. So when Sian applied for the show she wished she could give her family something new whilst still creating that homely feel. Sian, Justin and family have moved from church house to church house throughout their lives but it is difficult to get into the groove of a home with so much movement and so little furniture. Here Sian was keen to create a home that her children could be proud of, an inviting place for the parishioners to come round and talk and bedrooms that the children would be happy growing up in. With her husband working 6 or 7 days a week he has little time to decorate or change the Rectory and that's just where 60 Minute Makeover comes in.

The designer Derek Taylor, chose a style full of clean-lines with a shaker theme running throughout the downstairs. Upstairs, he has specifically picked an African, tribal theme for the bedroom and a Moroccan theme for Hannele (Sian and Justin's eldest daughter). Derek is keen to create a homely welcoming feel for family and parishioners whilst giving the house an identity that is specific to the Lewis-Anthony's rather than an entirely neutral vicarage.

THE DINING ROOM

Before the makeover After the makeover Odyssey sample

The theme in the dining room follows through from the lounge and here the apricot walls and the shocking peach radiator and doors have been replaced with a calming neutral tone with a focus wall of some fabulous Blue Quest wallpaper from Tektura. A central dining table and chairs in solid oak enhance the Shaker theme, and even simple tips like re-upholstering the piano stool add to a theme rather than the previous mis-mash of ideas that had belonged in this room.

INFORMATION

Tektura's wallcovering Odyssey - colour Blue Quest - was used in the dining room. Odyssey is available in various colours, and is a high-performance fabric-backed vinyl with a deep chunky texture. It is 137cm wide, and available by the linear metre.
